Competition: UEFA Champions League
Kick off: Wednesday • 20:00
Selection: Newcastle -1 Handicap
Newcastle United return to St James’ Park holding a commanding five goal aggregate advantage after dismantling Qarabağ 6-1 in the first leg of this Champions League knockout play off tie.
Eddie Howe’s side effectively wrapped up qualification inside 45 minutes last week, scoring five times before half time in one of the most dominant European performances of the season.
For Qarabağ, the task borders on impossible. No side in major European competition history has overturned a deficit of five or more goals in a two legged knockout tie. The Azerbaijani champions now attempt what would be the greatest comeback the Champions League has ever seen.
Newcastle’s attacking numbers in Europe have been outstanding. They have scored six unanswered goals between the 30th minute and half time in this season’s Champions League, underlining their ability to overwhelm opponents in bursts.
However, domestic form has been less convincing. A 2-1 defeat to Manchester City at the weekend dented momentum, and they have lost three of their last four competitive home fixtures across all competitions.
Qarabağ were spared league duties at the weekend, giving them time to regroup. Yet defensively they have struggled badly in Europe, conceding 27 goals in this campaign. Only one more would see them match the unwanted record of 28 goals conceded in a single Champions League season since the rebrand in 1992.
The first leg extended Qarabağ’s poor record against English opposition. They have now lost nine of ten European meetings with English clubs, drawing the other.
Away from home against English sides, they have lost all five fixtures by an aggregate score of 19-1.
History offers little encouragement for the visitors heading into this decisive second leg.
Newcastle are chasing a sixth Champions League win of the season, which would equal their all time club record in a single campaign.
Despite defensive issues at home recently, they continue to create high volume chances, especially in European fixtures.
Qarabağ have conceded 6+ goals in successive Champions League matches this season, placing them among a very small group in tournament history to suffer such heavy back to back defeats.
While Newcastle may rotate with the tie virtually secured, squad depth and attacking quality still heavily favour the hosts. Even with a controlled performance, the gulf in class remains significant.
Anthony Gordon was electric in the first leg, scoring four times to move into double figures for the Champions League season. Only two players have ever scored more in a single European campaign for an English club.
For Qarabağ, Abdellah Zoubir remains their primary creative outlet. He assisted the consolation goal in the first leg and tends to influence matches during the middle third of games.
Newcastle hold a five goal cushion, but momentum, confidence and home advantage still point towards another strong performance.
Qarabağ’s defensive record in this competition is historically poor, and their away numbers against English sides are even more concerning.
Even allowing for potential squad rotation, Newcastle -1 on the handicap offers value in Champions League betting markets.
A professional win without overexertion is the most likely outcome, with the Magpies advancing comfortably to the last 16.
